July 29th 2000 to August 31st 2000
Opening on 29th July 2000 this new Galeri Puri in Hotel Puri Melaka will present an inaugural Art exhibition of works by 56 artists from Malaysia and Members of the Singapore Art Society. Included in this exhibition will be acrylic, batik, Chinese ink, oils, watercolours, mixed media paintings and 3D ceramic works.
On the theme of "Serenity Melaka", the challenge to the artists is not only to create works that reflect the tranquility of Malaysia and Melaka but also to challenge them to reflect their identity. The result is the diversified and spontaneous creative output by the 56 participating artists covering a wide variety of subject matter, from the idyllic life of the Malay kampong, the historical relic architecture of Melaka, the rustic riverbank houses scene, the old charm of the street scene, the historically rich Peranakan culture, the timeless landscape and the sensitivity of social commentary. The styles of the artists reflect their influences by a diversified range of creativity ranging from the post impressionism, old English watercolours, modern expressionist, abstract, the experimental and the ever sweet Lingnan style of Chinese painting. Most of all, their spirit of the colours in the art pieces is still the Nanyang style influence.
The curatoral challenge is to harmonise this diversified creative output into a show that showcases the best of the artistic talents. The main focus is to bring the artists from 2 friendly neighbours and create a platform for exchange of ideas and hopefully inspire and encourage each other to reach a higher level of artistic creativity.
Galeri Puri is committed to continue to present works of established and emerging artists, be it a solo show or a group show. Art programs in the future will include talks, seminars and forums. Painting workshops will also be organised to encourage aspiring artists to learn Art from our established artists. Galeri Puri would be pleased to continue to contribute in a small way to participate and organize art events to promote Melaka as an art hub of South East Asia.
The gallery opens every day from 9am to 6pm.
